In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling hills, lived a shepherd boy. His being was essentially unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was mainly to tend to his flock of rams.
Their soft bleating and the whispering of the breezes across the single tree on the hilltop were his constant co-dwellers. Day after day, watching over his wards inculcated in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
But, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for company. During one such occasion out of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty plan.
Tales of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a prank on the villagers.
One day he here dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but discovered no beast.
The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This game persisted for a few days more. But, one noon, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy raced for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is hard to regain. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
